Devotion & Meditation

Brother, if you have no devotion, what is the point of having come into the world? Without devotion, you cannot cross the worldly ocean. Without meditation on the True Name, you are no better than a dog, or a bird trapped by its greed. There is only one True Name. It is the Doer, fearless and without opposition, indestructible, birth less and self-existent. you can meditate upon it by the Grace of the Master.
It has been the Truth from the beginning of time, it is the Truth now, and will be so in future. Meditate with each breath on God's Name. Don't waste a single breath. Who knows whether the next breath will come or not? A person who has no love and devotion for God is most unfortunate sinner.

What is Truth?


When a person is dreaming, the dream appears to be reality. At that time you don't know that it's a dream. A person realizes the falsehood of that dream only when he awakens, when he opens his eyes and finds out that whatever he was seeing in the dream is not there. In the same way, we also realize that this world is not real when we close out eyes. When we close our eyes and go deep into meditation, into Knowledge, then we realize that this world which looks real is not real. The truth which was yesterday but will not be tomorrow is not truth. Truth is that which is eternal, which is permanent all the time.

From the Ramayana

God says, Now I will tell you the nine forms of devotion. The first is fellowship with the saints, and the second is marked by a fondness for My stories. Humble service on one's preceptor is the third form, while the forth consists in singing My praises with a guileless purpose. Meditating upon My Name with unwavering faith constitutes the fifth form. The sixth consists in the practice of self control and virtue, desisting from all manifold activates and ever pursuing the course of conduct prescribed for saints. He who practices the seventh type sees the world full of Me without distinction and reckons the saints as even greater than Myself. He who cultivates the eighth type remains contented with whatever he gets and never thinks of detecting others' faults. The ninth form demands that one should be guileless and straight in one's dealings with everybody, and in his heart cherish implicit faith in Me without either exultation or depression. Whoever possesses any one of these nine forms of devotion, be he man or woman, or any other creature, is most dear to me.

Tulsi Das Ji


Tulsidas was born in 1532 A.D. He had to struggle hard from early childhood. His parents deserted him because he was born under an ominous star (Mul Nakshtra). Since his parents abandoned him, he was brought up by Baba Narhari Das, whom Tulsi calls his preceptor. He was married to Ratnawali, daughter of Dinabandhu Pathak, whom he loved intensely. Once chastised by her for his excessive passion he renounced the world and became a devotee of Lord Rama.
Ramcharitmanas, Vinayapatrika and Gitavali are the most prominent works of Tulsidas. Ramcharitmanas his magnum opus is one of the most outstanding epics in world literature.
Tulsidas had full command of Braj and Awadhi, the most popular language of poetic expression in his time. He preferred Awadhi for his EPIC and BRAJ for his lyrics, and BHOJPURI-tinged Awadhi for his 'MANGAL KAVYAS' He understood the people and their minds ,and in the character of LORD RAMA he gave them the highest human ideal that could be the anchor of man's purest thoughts in a world of sorrow and sufferings. Tulsidas achieved a synthesis between various warring religious sects and orders among the Hindus. He also struck a compromise between the NIRGUN and the SAGUN modes of worship. His Ramcharitmanas is the quintessence of all scriptures and philosophy, and his other works are equally instinct with great power.
Tulsidas is a master of verbal art. His works cover a vast range and infinite variety of sound patterns from the simplest to the most complex, and from the most delicate to the most tempestuous. The verbal structure in his earlier works, such as Nahchhu, Janaki-Mangal and Parvati-Mangal, are simple i.e. soft and straight. In Ramcharitmanas, there is a synthesis of the simple and the complex and Vinay-patrika is characterized by a remarkable cohesion of sound and sense – by a kind of compactness in which hard philosophical is cast into tough verbal moulds.
Tulsidas' poetic creation teems with all kinds of emotive experience, but they are invariably controlled by an inherent moral consciousness which imparts a peculiar purity and dignity to them. Being an epic writer, he has naturally covered a vast canvas of human life in all its phases and portrayed all the passions at different level of intensity. His innate faith in the piety of human soul which is pre-eminently symbolized by the moral character of his hero-purges the emotions of their baser elements. Whether it is the portrayal of love and valour, of sorrow or indignation, of humility or remorse, there is always a pleasant sophistication about it. He has an equal command of the beautiful and the sublime, he can be more impetuous and also most refined according to situations. Some of the sentiments and their expressions may sound out-of-date today, and the modern reader may fail to share or appreciate them. The cardinal sentiment, Bhakti itself, may not evoke a proper response in him. But there are other basic sentiments to which he responds inevitably: the manifestation or form of expression might have changed with social conditions, but their essential affective quality remains the same. Rama's serenity and dignity, his commitment to a noble cause, Bharat's devotion to his elder brother, and Lakshman's indignation against all kinds of injustice and offence, Hanuman's valour combined with a complete sense of dedication to the master. Sita's chastity and selfless love, Ravana’s indomitable pride: all these have been depicted with such empathy and ingenuity that they transgress the limits of time and place.

Sheikh Farid


Sheikh Farid is numbered among the greatest Indians saints. He was born in Kothawal in 1173 A.D. in the month of Ramzan, which is devoted to fasting according to Muslim tradition. It is said that the newborn child refused to drink his mother's milk during the hours ordained for fasting. He was named fariduddin Masaud or Farid, which is Arabic word for 'unique'. He was also called 'Shakar-Ganj'. Being fatherless, Farid was brought up by his very pious mother, Qarsum Bibi. She educated him in the essentials of religion and strict duties enjoined upon believers of Islam. It is said that by the age of eight the child had learned the Qu'ran by heart.
He was called 'Shakar-Ganj' because his mother regularly induced him to say his prayers by placing a packet of Shakar (brown sugar) under his prayer mat. Once it is said that she forgot to place this incentive in the usual place. Such was the piety of the child and such the divine favour bestowed upon him that a package of Shakar nevertheless appeared in the usual place. But the real explanation of the name may be derived from the blessing which he is recorded to have received from his spiritual preceptor, Khwaja Qutbudin Bakhtiyar Kaki, who praised his sweetness of disposition, and remarked: 'You shall be as sweet as sugar' .
Once the 'King of Enlightened Ones', Hazrat Khwaja Muinuddin Hasan (Qutbuddin's Master) visited Qutbuddin, who presented his own disciples to him. Each got blessings in accordance with his merit. After that the Master asked, 'Master Qutbuddin, is any one of your disciples still remaining?' He replied, 'A hermit named Masaud is undergoing chilla (constant prayer for forty days with head hung downwards) and thus has not been able to come'. The Master got up and said, 'Come let me see that wilderness.' Then both of these great saints, lords of spiritual experience, came to the isolated cell of Farid. As the door opened, Shakar-Ganj was seen to be so weak that he could not even bend to make his obeisance. So, tears welled up in his eyes and he placed his fore head on the ground. When the Master saw this he said, 'Qutbuddin how long will you torment this poor soul with these ascetic exercises? Come, let us confer our blessing on him.' So they held him up one arm each and Hazrat Khwaja Muinuddin Hassan, turning his face heavenward, prayed: 'Thou Lord God of Highest Glory! Accept the penance of Farid and bestow upon him the highest sainthood.' At once a voice replied, 'I have accepted Farid. He is unique and unequalled among mankind.' This divine oracle sent Farid into state of ecstasy. When Qutbuddin saw this, he transmitted to him the 'Great Name'. Divine Illumination was revealed to Farid and no veil was left to intervene between him and God, the Supreme Lord of all. Then the Master Hazrat Khwaja Muinuddin Hassan conferred on him his own special robe, and Qutbuddin gave him his turban and shawl and whatever else was needed to appoint him his successor.
Farid's Teachings: True devotees are those whose hearts are sincerely in love with God. Those whose heart is contradicted by their tongue are hypocrites. The true devotees soaked in God's love are ever in ecstasy of realization. Those indifferent to him are burden on the earth. The true devotees are those whom God attaches unto Himself. Blessed is their birth and their life is truly fruitful. Worship those who have realized God. Seek shelter only in the Lord. He alone is the Bestower of forgiverness.

Mahatma Buddha

Around B.C. 563 on the day of Vaishaki Purnima, King Shudhodhana of Kapil Vastu was blessed with a son, named Siddhartha, who was born near Lumbini in the royal garden under a sal tree. Siddhartha was brought up by his step mother Prajapati Gautami as his mother Mahamaya died after few days of his birth. His father arranged a life of all worldly riches and luxury for him, as Asit Muni's prediction that Siddhartha would become either an emporer or a sanyasi was always on his mind. Indeed, Siddhartha did later abandon his beautiful wife Yashodhara and new born son Rahul in the dead of night to go and do penance in the forest. During the course of his travels on foot from one place to the other in search of the truth, he listened to spiritual discourses from many saints and philosophers and tried to acquire Spiritual Knowledge. Even though he was initiated into tantras, mantras and siddhyoga he could not find the true saint who could initiate him on the spiritual path. At last, he along with his five disciples settled down to do rigorous austerities at a place named Usvela in Gaya. Though he had become extremely weak and thin due to the rigorous regime of penances, he was always dissatisfied and disconted, One day he heard a song, 'Don’t tighten the string so much that it breaks, neither loosen it so much that it makes no sound', being sung by some village girls of Urubilva, near the place of his penance. After listening to this song, Siddhartha was inspired to adopt a middle path. He understood that he was tightening too much the wire of his life through his rigorous penance. One day one woman named Sujata came there to worship the peepal tree. Sujata offered milky rice to Siddhartha, which he ate. His disciples thought that this woman had tempted him and so they abandoned him. Despite this he continued his meditation uninterruptedly. By virtue of his continued meditation on the Divine Knowledge imparted by the spiritual Master Sujata, he achieved enlightenment on Baisakh Purnima under the same tree, on the bank of the river Niranjana, where he had been sitting for meditation. So he is called 'Gautam Buddha', the tree is known as ‘Bodhivriksha’ and the place was called ‘Bodhgaya’. Then the five disciples, who had abandoned him earlier, came back to his shelter near Sarnath and Lord Buddha initiated them into the spiritual path. He inspired his stepmother Prajapati Gautami, his wife Yashodhara and his son Rahul with his teaching and subsequently they all got initiated in the spiritual path and became his disciples. Lord Buddha taught people precepts such as the importance of non-violence and the equity of all creatures. Lord Buddha discoursed at length that the world is full of miseries and about the cause of all troubles. However, he emphatically said that it was possible to wipe out all worldly miseries and thus achieve salvation.

Meera Bai


Devotion and realization is not limited to any particular time, place or culture. For the heart that is full of divine love, nothing is too great an obstacle to the union with the beloved. Such a noble soul was Meera Bai, the poetess that is universally regarded as one of the greatest saints of India. Details of her life are shrouded in mystery and it is often hard to sift fact from legend with regard to her birth, marriage and death, but historians agree that she was a princess of the Rathore dynasty of Merta, and lived during the reign of Akbar.
The daughter of Rao Rattan Singh, she was born in 1498 AD in Merta in Rajputana, land of the proud and valiant Rajputs. Legend tells us that at the age of five, she was standing one day on the balcony of her father’s place watching a bridal procession. When she saw the bridegroom, richly robed and adorned, she excitedly asked her mother, 'Where is my bridegroom?' She asked over and over again and finally, to silence her, her mother pointed to a statue of Krishna and said 'There he is!' From then on she passed her time talking and singing to the statue, dressing it and feeding it. As far as she was concerned, Krishna was indeed her husband, and she served him with this attitude. Her carefree days were not to last, however she betrothed to Prince Bhoj Raj of Chittor.
Rather than lessening her love for Krishna, however, her marriage merely served to increase her desire to know him. Although she carried out her wifely duties conscientiously, she spent as much time as she could in meditation and devotion. She had already told her mother, 'Mother, Girdhar Gopal married me in a dream. I wore a red and yellow veil. And my hands were beautifully decorated with henna'. I have loved the Divine Cowherd, the Flute-player, since my childhood. This love is eternal and I will never abandon it.'
She eagerly sought the company of holy men, singing and dancing in satsang. This greatly angered her relatives, who considered her a disgrace. Her sister-in law spread a rumour that she was unfaithful and met strangers at midnight. This enraged Bhoj Raj, as well it might, and one night burst into her room, only to find her chanting ardently before her statue of Krishna. He felt ashamed of himself and had a temple built where she could worship unhindered.
Mira suffered intensely at this time. Her love for Krishna was pure and unconditional, but, because she hadn't experienced practical knowledge of God, she felt separated from Him. The taunts and suspicions of her relatives were bad enough, but even more agonizing was her longing to see the Lord face-to-face: 'Show my thy face, Beloved. Without thee, my existence is like a lotus without water or a night without the moon. I, Thy handmaiden, am lost without Thee. All night I wander alone, for this separation. Gnaws at my very heart and soul'. Her yearning for spiritual insight attracted the saint who became her Guru and who imparted to her the Knowledge which enabled her to see Krishna as He really is, the all-pervading Universal Reality. Raidas, a cobbler, initiated Meera, a princess, and from that moment the tone of her songs changes from helpless yearning to joy and ecstasy. By means of the Holy Name, she could now see Krishna whenever she wanted to within herself and her joy and devotion knew no bounds – 'I will plant Thee a garden and gaze upon Thy face each day'. She danced and sang, urging her listeners, 'Swiftly the moments pass you by. Why do you fail to remember His Name?'

Mind under Control.

Take the example of photographer. If the camera trembles in his hands, everyone will say that the photo will get blurred. In the similar way, every devotee wants to have vision of god through the camera of his mind. If hes mind remains restless, he cannot see God, he cannot have God-realization. So, out first duty should be to bring our mind under control.

When the Soul is awakened.

In the jail a man receives food; the same air is inside the jail as outside, the same dirt is inside the jail as outside. Outside the jail, however, he experiences something he can never feel inside the jail. Inside the jail he was dependent; outside he is independent.
Similarly, your soul desires freedom. It doesn't want you to identify with the mask of maya, whether these come from mind or the intellect. It wants you to know it in its true form, to understand its original form. It is chafing in slavery to the mind, and it desires only freedom. This means that the thirst of our soul is not quenched from life to life. Until this soul acquires Knowledge, it remains thirsty. The saints talked about the sounds of the soul, not sounds of the mind or intelect. When the soul is awakened, a man dows not remain merely human but acquires divine quailites. Within you is hidden a yogi, a devotee, a meditator. The devotee in  you is waiting to be awakened. That devotee is within everyone.

We have to perform action

Take an orange. If you taste the skin, the peel, it is very bitter. You take out the bitterness, and taste the sweetness within. It is like throwing away the darkness removing the insulation and tasting the essence. And i think we all want to taste the essence, but we are not ready, we have doubts, we cannot begin. If you people had doubts that maybe the ceiling of this hall will collapse, you would not be here. If you had doubts that 'Oh, if we go out, maybe we will be killed,' then your would never go out. We all have to believe, we all have to stand on hope. That is why we have to perform action.

Satsang

Before sowing the seeds, a farmer ploughs the field, clears every thing up, throws away the dirt and then sows the seed. In the same way your heart has to be ploughed by satsang. and once you are ploughed, once you become guileless, the seed of that experience can be imparted to you. What is that experience? That experience is not believing, that experience is not imagining, because we do not sit and imagine things. No, it is not that. It is something beyond imagination.

But how to get free from such liabilities, how to save our self from this illusion of give and take.
